Occasionally, CommodityPoint discovers new CTRM vendors that we had been unaware of. Just recently, we discovered CMStrade in Switzerland. In fact, CMS trade have been in the industry around 30-years and have had over 150 customers for its software in that time. Today, it has around 25 customers and less than 10 staff operating out of Lausanne. I spoke with Mr. K. Mizan-Bertola about the company and its products this week and even took a demonstration of the software.

Commodity trading, transaction and risk management, as a practice, is complex, very complex and for a variety of reasons. Traders in this industry can, and many do, transact in multiple commodities, multiple markets, multiple instruments, multiple assets, multiple currencies, and utilize multiple transportation methods; making their buying and selling decisions by constantly tracking and analyzing price trends, price correlations, supply/demand imbalances, physical system constraints, weather forecasts, and a plethora of other factors, both internal and external to their company. Even the most “simple” commodity trading activities (such as buying/selling a single commodity in a specific market or region) usually involve complex deal structures and specific and highly detailed logistical requirements.

Is Software as a Service Catching On?

Posted by Gary M. Vasey On March - 24 - 2010 ADD COMMENTS

Traditionally, CTRM software has been delivered via a licensing arrangement where the software is installed at the user’s site. Implementations are long, expensive and quite risky. CommodityPoint data suggests that CTRM implementationscosts range from one to three times the cost of the software licenses and a fair proportion of projects end with a suboptimal result or a failed implementation.
